Who Were the Witches?
In medieval Europe, “witches” were not simply characters from folklore or women who practiced magic. They became symbols of “difference” — people who thought differently, lived unconventionally, or simply didn’t conform. Often, they were just lonely old women, women who were too beautiful, too clever, too outspoken, or simply “inappropriate” in the eyes of their society.
The infamous Witch Hunts, which peaked between the 15th and 18th centuries, saw thousands accused, tortured, and executed , especially across Western Europe and North America. While exact numbers are impossible to confirm, historians estimate that up to 200,000 people may have fallen victim to these persecutions the vast majority of them women.
So, what made these atrocities seem “righteous” and “justified” in the eyes of their time?
For me, the answer is simple: religion and fear.
That fear was weaponized by religion, by institutions, by those in power to control minds, assert dominance, and silence the different.
Witches didn’t die because of magic. They died because of human prejudice.
